Lenten Meditations

We invite you to share in the 2017 Lenten email series from Episcopal Relief & Development.  Each day during Lent you will receive a daily emailed reflection, co-authored by a group of Anglican Communion and other faith leaders. During this season of reflection on our Christian faith, their writings will enhance your spiritual journey as they both inspire and challenge you.  Each daily meditation is presented in both English and Spanish. Click here to sign up.

Lenten devotionals are also available in the back pew of the church. This year’s selection, “The Sanctuary for Lent 2017” by Donald K. McKim, commemorates the Reformation’s 500th anniversary. Entries include a quote from a Reformer, Scripture passage, reflection, and closing petition.

Preserve our Heritage Campaign Update

The Preserve Our Heritage Campaign is officially underway!  If you have driven by the Church lately during the week, you likely have noticed the trucks and workers. This work is the beginning of a multi-faceted effort to restore and improve the structures that are critical to our worship and parish life as well as to our School.

The Campaign goal is $445,000, and we launched the Campaign with existing commitments totaling $245,000 from the School, our Endowment, and a few large individual donations.  We have now set out to raise the remaining $200,000 from St. John’s parishioners to reach our goal, and we have received $70,300 in contributions from 36 parishioners toward that goal to date.

If you haven’t yet contributed to the Campaign, please prayerfully consider a gift.  Contributions to the Campaign should be made to St. John’s Church, and please note “Preserve Our Heritage” on the check.  If you have questions on the Campaign or didn’t see the February 8 letter outlining details of the Campaign,
please contact the Church Office.  Thank you!

Our own Carol Ihrig is serving once again as a volunteer on the team. Kairos Prison Ministry is a Christian faith-based ministry that addresses the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos hopes to change hearts, transform lives, and impact the world. Please remember to pray for the residents and the members of our team.

Less than two weeks into registration and we’ve already had so many kids sign up that we may need to close registration soon until we get more volunteers. You do NOT need to be athletic to help out. If you want to help, we have a job to fit your interests and availability!

So please log on, sign up, spread the word, and get in the game! It’s going to be fantastic!

Inviting Families with Children to our Wednesday Event Lenten Series

St. John’s will be hosting an evening Lenten series from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in Lent. The topic for this year is on Harold Kushner’s book, “When Bad Things Happen to Good People,” and will be led by the Rev. Everett Walk of Sarasota. For adults, the evening will offer a discussion of spirituality as it pertains to coping with crisis. In an effort to welcome families to this fellowship opportunity, we also created a special Lenten series for children to partake in simultaneously, which will include seasonally relevant discussion topics, games, and activities in the Lowry Room during the adult discussion in the Parish Hall. We hope you will come and enjoy dinner as a family, and then embrace nourishment for souls of all ages in the programs after dinner.
