Mark your calendars for Advent Lessons and Carols given by our Choir this Sunday, December 3 at 5:00 p.m. in the Church. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
The music at this service features some of the best-loved carols of the season for choir and congregation. The service opens with the setting by Palestrina of the Matin Responsory, written to be sung on the First Sunday of Advent in the service of Matins (early medieval Roman rite). New for this year to St. John’s is Patrick Hadley’s hauntingly beautiful setting of “I sing of a Maiden,” a fifteenth century anonymous carol celebrating the Annunciation and Virgin Birth of Jesus. The piece is set for sopranos and altos only, and Hadley dedicated the work to his own mother.
